Please install the Ubuntu 32-bit package that you can get here:

https://launchpad.net/nwfermi

It is the fourth green button on the right hand side.

Then reboot and retest your touchscreen.

More info: the error message that I get is the following:

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of nwfermi:
 nwfermi depends on xf86-input-nextwindow; however:
  Package xf86-input-nextwindow is not installed.
dpkg: error processing nwfermi (--install):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Processing triggers for ureadahead ...
Errors were encountered while processing:
 nwfermi

Tried to find that xf86-input-nextwindow, but can't seem to find it. Any help would be appreciated.

Peace,
Jon

I'm having the same problem as the OP. On my HP 320-1020m, touchscreen is not functional.

I did successfully install the package suggested by Mark Rijckenberg. (I had to add "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/djpnewton/xf86-input-nextwindow/ubuntu natty main" to sources.list and install xf86-input-nextwindow before installing the deb.)

I did not notice any change in behavior after doing so and rebooting.

Looking in /dev/input, I see no touchscreen devices, and after cat'ing each device in /dev/input, none give output when I touch the touchscreen.

I'm available if you have any other diagnostic steps you'd like to me to take.

Using the information at

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/379313

two missing steps were done, and the touchscreen works.

Thanks to those posting on that thread, and nod to Mr Newton, and Enrico.

@ Peter Benjamin, I couldn't decipher anything on that page you linked...what are the two missing steps? I'm not an expert user and just want to get this working.

Peace,
Jon

In brief (Do read the comment)

     sudo modprobe nw-fermi
     sudo sh -c "echo 1926 007a > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/nwfermi/new_id"

Moreover, I tweaked to work after reboot:
- Add "nw-fermi" to /etc/modules
- Add boot script to /etc/rc.local
        sh -c "echo 1926 007a > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/nwfermi/new_id"

I tried to follow the steps, but I can't even begin because I couldn't install the nwfermi package due to dependency issues...here is what it says when I try to enter "sudo dpkg -i nwfermi-0.6.1.0_i386.deb":

Selecting previously deselected package nwfermi.
(Reading database ... 328150 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking nwfermi (from nwfermi-0.6.1.0_i386.deb) ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of nwfermi:
 nwfermi depends on xf86-input-nextwindow; however:
  Package xf86-input-nextwindow is not installed.
dpkg: error processing nwfermi (--install):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Processing triggers for ureadahead ...
Errors were encountered while processing:
 nwfermi

I've tried to locate what looks to be the missing package (xf86-input-nextwindow), but with no result. Is there a repository I need to add in order to find it? Any help would be appreciated, since as I said I can't even begin the fix you found until nwfermi is installed.
