What is the status of the extra-addons and community branches?

Dear community and core team,
With the rise of "openerp apps", there is much less incentive to use the community-driven branches than before.
The contribution guidelines don't even mention them: http://doc.openerp.com/v6.0/contribute/15_guidelines/contribution_guidelines.html#
Should we avoid pushing new modules there?
