No it is not. It is built by Ubuntu packagers from the pristine OO sources

The Ubuntu version is much closer to the "Novell Edition" than to the "Sun Edition."

It is essentially the Novell version yes. It is built from the OpenOffice.org (Sun) sources with ooo-build (contribed by Novell and virtually all other Linux distributions) patches.

By the way I am the Ubuntu openoffice.org maintainer.
