microphone no longer works in skype

Asked by Rykel from Singapore

Hi, the built-in microphone on my ASUS EeePC 4G used to work well in Skype with Ubuntu Karmic and Pulseaudio. There was a bit of cracking sound though.

I am not sure what I did, but now, the microphone is totally silent and does not work at all. The cracking sound still occasionally appear itself when I try out Skype Test Call.

Is there a way I can restore Pulseaudio to the default settings and let it re-detect my hardware? (much like a "factory reset" and "reconfigure")

Thanks for advice!

1) Can you record properly in Sound Recorder?

2) I would then try to check the Sound Preferences by right clicking the
sound applet in the panel. In the input tab select you input device and
, then bring the input volume up, if you do not see your voice, play
with the connector settings.

3) Make sure you are running the latest Skype.

$ dpkg -l skype
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
|
Status=Not/Inst/Cfg-files/Unpacked/Failed-cfg/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name Version Description
+++-=========================-=========================-==================================================================
ii skype 2.1.0.47-1 Skype - Take a
deep breath

Let me know how it works out. I can test out the reinstall command in a
VM if necessary, not sure if that works in karmic.

Hi "koala" komputes :)

1) Can you record properly in Sound Recorder?

NO. Only a consistent buzz.

2) I would then try to check the Sound Preferences by right clicking the
sound applet in the panel. In the input tab select you input device and
, then bring the input volume up, if you do not see your voice, play
with the connector settings.

Done. In fact, the microphone indicator was moving as I spoke.

3) Make sure you are running the latest Skype.

Absolutely. Version 2.1.0.47-1.

Conclusion, the microphone is still NOT working. Please show me how to "factory reset" pulseaudio and have Ubuntu "rescan/reconfigure" my soundcard. Thanks so much!!

I had a 2G and I needed to append the following line to
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf for the microphone to work:

options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig

I don't know if this is still the case with recent releases, but it's
worth a try as well. If you can't record to gnome-sound-recorder, then
the issue is deeper than pulseaudio. Are any programs able to record
properly?
