how can i uninstall qimo

Asked by Mike

I found something called "qimo" in the ubuntu software center, and installed it thinking it would give my girls (ages 3 and 4) something kinda fun and easy to use on the computer.

Wow.

Now my machine comes up with xubuntu (was ubuntu), and the desktop appears to be kde or something other than gnome.

I removed qimo from the software center, but still no joy.

After rebooting, I come up with a xubuntu startup screen, and now it dumps me into a totally black desktop with only awn running at the bottom (thank god for that at least), but no menu, no icons, just... black. I am able to launch software center from the terminal, but even then I get about 10 warnings ("No hints for albatross were found, using human hints"), no menu bar or border.

At this point, my machine is unusable by anyone in the house.

How do I remove qimo and get back my desktop and everything else?

From the login screen, after you click on your user name, at the bottom will be a combo box for "Session", change that back to Gnome before logging in. You can do this with Qimo still installed.

The Qimo packages depends on parts of Xubuntu, and those parts are replacing your default Plymouth boot splash. You can change it back to the Ubuntu logo by running this on the command line: "sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth", and then selecting "ubuntu-logo.plymouth".

I don't know where AWN is coming from, it's not part of the default Ubuntu, Xubuntu or Qimo installs. The best way to remove Qimo is to run the following: "sudo apt-get remove --purge qimo-session qimo-wallpaper qimo-games".

Ummm... let's see...
"From the login screen..."
- I have no login screen, I set it to take me straight to the desktop. This is my home machine, and I never saw the need to make anyone go through the login process for normal use.

"You can do this with Qimo still installed"
- I had already tried uninstalling it it from the software center prior to posting here.

"The Qimo packages depends on parts of Xubuntu"
- I didn't realize Qimo would switch me from ubuntu to xubuntu.

"...by running this on the command line: "sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth", and then selecting..."
- This command returns "Nothing to configure."

"I don't know where AWN is coming from,"
- I have been running it since last year, just to put some of the more frequently-used apps in an easy-to-find place. Fortunate, too, since that is the only part of the GUI that still functions!

"sudo apt-get remove --purge..."
- This command returns "Package qimo-session is not installed, so not removed The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:", and then lists about a dozen or so packages, such as: aumix, oss-compat, aumix-common, obexd-client... I believe that some of these are sound related, and after the headache of getting 5.1 sound to work, I don't know that I really want to start messing with anything related to that! And, I don't see how removing packages will give me back a functioning desktop, unless these packages were installed as part of the change to xubuntu. Which makes me wonder if my original sound setup (prior to installing qimo) is now hosed as well, even if I can get the desktop back.

Well now I am able to post from the home machine which is now working again.
I couldn't wait any longer for any other suggestions about getting rid of the mess this thing left, so I just did a complete wipe and reinstalled ubuntu.
Kinda sucks losing all of my pictures and such, but I guess shame on me for not backing up before installing a kid friendly application.

But at least I am back up and running.

Thanks anyway.

Not sure if I shouldve marked it as "solved", because I think the problems created by this were not actually addressed, and a complete re-install of the OS, while quite a major piece of surgery, is still just a band-aid. So not "solved", but "problem worked around."
