Test mail error code -2 Name or service not known

Asked by Doug

I have Simple Backup Suite 0.11.3 installed on an Ubuntu 11.04 machine. I'm using the Gnome GUI for configuration.

I have configured the "report by mail" option, but when I click on the "Test mail settings" button I get the following error message:

"The test failed with the following output: [Errno -2] Name or service not known."

I assume I'm getting this error because I don't have a "send mail" process available to Simple Backup. Evolution is installed but not configured. Is SBS trying to access a pop client to send the mail? Or perhaps it can't contact the smtp server? And advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello Doug,

thanks for using sbackup and asking this question.

sbackup uses Python's smtplib in order to send mails. It is not required to configure Evolution or mail daemons like postfix/sendmail.

The error message you are facing indicates that the smtp server cannot be connected. I use an account at the german provider GMX with following settings:

From: <email address hidden>
To: <email address hidden>
SMTP server: mail.gmx.net
Port: none (optional 587)
Username: 123456789
Password: ************* (of email account)
use TLS: yes

Please note:
Unfortunately, there is a bug in 0.11.0...3 which prevents sending of email reports at all (see LP #706037). I've comitted a fix for
this already though it will take some time to release an updated sbackup 0.11.4.

Best regards,
jean-peer.
