upgrade sbackup for ubuntu 8.04 and 10.04

Asked by Openstep

Hello,

sorry for posting it twice.
I have an older ubuntu 8.04 and for that I would like to know how to install a new sbackup. I need the uncompressd backup functionality of the new sbackup. Problem is synaptic will not offer the new version.

Can you tell me how to install it for ubuntu 8.04 and for ubuntu 10.04?

Many thanks

and no... I do not want to upgrade the 8.04 since it is a central server in a high school and works perfectly otherwise.

Hello openstep,

there is no package of sbackup 0.11 available for ubuntu 8.04 since it's mainly a desktop backup solution and 8.04-desktop is no longer supported.

However, you could try to install it directly from the source code. sbackup 0.11.4 is written in Python and therefore not hard to install from source (no compiling required). Just have a look at the README file and maybe you want to give it a try (you can test it in a virtual machine to be safe).

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Jean-Peer
