Can't scilab 5 (GPL compatible) be promoted to universe?
Asked by

As of now, Intrepid alpha 6 ships with scilab 4.1.2-5 in multiverse, as the old scilab license wasn't entirely free. The new scilab release (5.0.1) is destributed under the CeCILL license, with GPL bits, which seems to be GPL compatible.
A list of the software needed to run scilab is included in http://
Changing the launch script to make scilab use openjdk (in main) instead of the bundled sun-jre seems to work just fine. Scilab also makes use of tcl/tk, which are in main too. Also, the newest version includes a much improved user interface.
Is it possible to try to update to the newer version, or is it too late for intrepid?
