Hi,

Have you installed all of the updates? Also, are you using the image from here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/ubuntu-10.04.2-desktop-i386.iso ?

Thank you for the quick response.

Maybe the problem is because I'm running Lucid from a live USB... the thing
is, I'm having a laptop upgrade, but I want to be sure if the new one will
support ubuntu....

I'm pretty sure the inability to install the wireless drivers comes from the fact that you're running from live usb (it's read-only media and thus there is no way to install the drivers to disk).

Now, even though the Vostro 3400 is certified for Lucid, the actual components included can vary depending on the configuration you choose, and furthermore, they can vary over time as Dell upgrades the specs for the model (which they do without changing the model number). So the model certified is a specific one and the one you're testing might have slightly different specs (see here: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu-certification/+faq/1536).

Thus, if you're seeing unsupported components, it might be because the hardware has changed since then. Work is constantly being done on Ubuntu to support new components, so, unless you have a specific reason for wanting to run Lucid on your new computer, I'd suggest you try Maverick, or even Natty Narwhal (11.04, for which you can get a beta right now, or wait a couple of weeks for the final release).
