Asked by R. Douglas Hines

I have not installed Ubuntu yet. When you install it does it replace XP and keep all my other files or does it erase everything?

hi!

no, you could leave your WinXP with all its data.
Ubuntu will install GRUB loader, which let you choose which operation system you want to boot at every system start.

Simply carefully read all installation notes when you will install Ubuntu (especially partition part). I advise you to find a man, who had experience with installation, if you don't feel power in yourself :)

Well, here's a guide on howto install Ubuntu 9.04 dual-boot with XP.

https://help.ubuntu.com/9.04/switching/dualboot.html

But if you want to do a clean install of Ubuntu, deleting that way Windows XP from your computer, but still have your old files like music, videos, documents, etc. on Ubuntu later, you should do a backup of your files.

Can you help with this problem?
