An existing team for Japanese translation. I have been studying and practicing Japanese for almost 5 years, and had an internship with Hitachi Japan just recently few months back. Hence, I have to communicate in Japanese.

Asked by Kenneth Ham

I have been communicating, reading and writing Japanese for almost 5 years now and had an opportunity to work at Hitachi Japan headquarters as a developer and researcher. I have also been translating in the company between colleagues, and outside of work I did some translation at my church. In my country, I had some opportunities to translate some promotion and advertisement material into Japanese for a friend.

I believe that communication is one of the most important factor in teams and even when Ubuntu is reaching out to the world. Translation may seem a minor out of the majority which is the software, but in fact without accurate translation, there isn't any meaning to what the software is presenting no matter how good it may be. Hence, I believe that we must not be lost in translation especially to such a hugely supported software like Ubuntu. It is the essence to how many more will use Ubuntu.
Team communication can be achieved through chats like MSN, IRC or even emails and mailing list.
But I would propose an application to collaborate the team together which allows not only chat, but a system to email the chat automatically to the mailing list as well as various features to facilitate team communication. Where information is scattered through mailing list, forums, IRC, wikis, why not put everything back together on the cloud in one centralized platform.

With regards to translation guidelines. It is essential that the team set expectations of how the translation should be. Each language has its own language formality and that can't be overlooked. A slight change of words can be due form of disrespect to a user. Hence translation guidelines should be strictly monitored before approved.

I hope to contribute my knowledge back to the Ubuntu Community.

Hi Kenneth,

Thanks for your interest in contributing to Ubuntu with translations.

Reading your support request, I'm afraid I'm not sure what the actual request is. If it is about creating an Ubuntu Japanese translation team, there is already one at https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-l10n-ja.

I'd suggest getting in touch with them to join the translation effort. If your request is about something else, please let us know.

Thanks!

I realized that the request was for new translations. Apologies on that.
However, I would wish to help with the Japanese translation in Ubuntu as part of my contribution. Would you mind linking me up with the team in Ubuntu?
Thanks!

With Regards,
Kenneth Ham

Hi Kenneth,

I gave you the link to the Ubuntu Japanese translators on my previous reply. In any case, here it is again:

https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-l10n-ja

If you go to that URL, you'll find all the info you need to contact and join the Japanese team.

Happy translating!

Regards,
David.
