Ubuntu 9.1 freezes every time I start up as soon as desktop is loaded

Asked by Bummbull

I just installed Ubuntu 9.1. I have Windows 7 as my other OS. When I start Ubuntu 9.1, and I log in and enter my password, my desktop loads up and I can move the mouse cursor for about 10 seconds. Then, it freezes where I can't do anything. I have 2 monitors set up to integrated graphics card if that makes any difference. Please let me know if anyone can help me with this issue! Thanks!

I believe this might be related to the bug I filed, 516909.

Many people are having issues with these types of lockups in 9.10.

There's no solid reliable workaround that I've found yet.

So, should I just use my Windows 7, until this bug is fixed?

You could. I'm going to try some other distros. Centos 5.3 seems to work fine. I might try an ubuntu 10 beta or even try going backwards to 8.04.

Bumbull, it seems you have a GPU hang, but it may be unrelated to bug 516909. You can read about this kind of bug at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze .

You should be able to install 8.04 from an installation medium and wiping your 9.10 installation in the process.

I was able to log in without freezing when I did this: at the log in, I changed from from Gnome to something called like safe-fire Gnome. I don't think that's the name of the option, but anyways, I changed from Gnome to something else. Then, my computer didn't freeze at all! What's the difference between them? Do I always have to log in that way, or would I be able to log in back to Gnome if I do something else? Thanks for your help!!!
