Ubuntu 9.1 on pendrive, computer connects to internet, but firefox ,empathy and evolution do not.

Asked by Robert Kettlewell

I have put ubuntu 9.1 on a pendrive and tried it on my netbook. The netbook connects in both wirless and hard wired modes to the router and has been tested by pinging. 5 packets sent.5 packets received. However Firefox 3.5 will not connect to a web site, all i get eventually is a timed out message. In fact non of the internet programmes will connect. I also downloaded Ubuntu 9.10 remix to a pendrive and have exactly the same problem.

I have also checked all the security parameters and permissions. The netbook definitely connects to the internet so it looks as if there could be a driver problem with ubuntu and my Toshiba nb100. Is this possible? Or could it be a DNS problem? If i ping from within Firefox by entering a web address by number , it comes back and says it is trying to load a web page from the web site and gives the name.- so why wont it display a web page?

The dig is useful, can you run the command and give the output, if you want you can run:

dig www.google.com > ~/Desktop/outrewq.txt; ping 8.8.8.8 -c 1 >> ~/Desktop/outrewq.txt; ping www.google.com -c 1 >> ~/Desktop/outrewq.txt; cat /etc/resolv.conf >> ~/Desktop/outrewq.txt

and copy outrewq.txt from the desktop to a removable media to be used on a web accessible system.

Neither empathy or evolution will connect to the internet .
I have just set up evolution in ubunutu 9.1 and it does not connect. My
netbook connects directly to the router and i am not using a proxy server.
I wont be able to contact you again for six days. ( my netbook normally
operates from ubuntu 8.1 and that is fine in all respects except printing
from firefox) However i am trying to get ubuntu 9.1 to work from my memory

Are you by any chance running the 64-bit version of Ubuntu 9.10 on your pen-drive?

If you're still having this problem, could you please try this:
In Firefox, go to about:config (type this in your address bar and hit Enter)
Click the "I'll be careful ..." button.
In the Filter box, type 'network.dns.disableIPv6'.
You should now have a single corresponding setting visible in the list below; double-click it to set it to True.
Now open another tab, and try to visit google.com (or any other URL).

Could you please respond with information on whether that works or not?

Thanks,
Ed.

Hi Ed,

I am using a 32bit version of Ubuntu.
I have tried about: config which reduced a long list to no list. ie not a
single item in the list. However when i reloaded firefox and looked at the
list again the instruction was in the list with a status of default, type
boolean, and value of false.

network.dnsipv4only domains status - user set, type string, value true.

I still cannot load a web page.

Good. I was wondering how you managed to change 'network.dns.disableIPv6' to:
"network.dnsipv4only domains"

OK, I think what you're experiencing is this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eglibc/+bug/417757

Are you using your DSL modem/router as your DNS server? That is, if you view the contents of /etc/resolv.conf, do you have the nameserver set to the local IP address of your DSL modem/router? If so, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eglibc/+bug/417757/comments/11 says you can try and use your ISP's or OpenDNS' DNS server IP addresses instead of the DSL modem's.

In NetworkManager, enter the DNS server IP addresses in the DNS tab, then right-click NetworkManager's icon in the status tray, disable networking, and re-enable networking. Check the contents of /etc/resolv.conf to make sure the new IP addresses are put in.) After this, try out Evolution and see if it works.

OpenDNS' DNS servers are: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
Google Public DNS servers are: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
For your ISP's DNS server addresses, please contact their support/helpdesk.

Hi Ed,

Sorry to be so long getting back to you.
First i changed the Ipv6 network dns in the table to True. it was previously
false. That enabled me to get access to the internet through Firefox only.
Evolution and ubuntuoneand empathy still do not connect. My ISP could not
give me an IP address and said DNS only.

However i changed my Etho connection to manual and put the addresses below
in together with the mask set of 255.255.255.0 . This made no difference in
that i was still able to connect to the Internet with firefox but none of
the others. I could not find a network manager programme in ubuntu 9.1 ,
only network connections under system and network tools under admin.
Evolution works well under Ubuntu 8.1 .So what has changed between the two
versions?

Robert

System > Preferences > Network Connections yields the same settings
dialog as right-clicking the NetworkManager icon in the status tray,
as far as I can see.
In this dialog's IPv4 Settings tab, you could choose the "Automatic
(DHCP) addresses only" option for "Method". This causes the "DNS
servers" text entry to be enabled. In the "DNS servers" text entry,
paste or type in the OpenDNS or GoogleDNS servers' IP addresses --
for example, "8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4" (without the quotes). Watch the Apply
button - when it's greyed out, the entry is invalid; the button is
enabled when your entries are "understood".

After entering the "DNS servers" as given, click Apply, and enter your
password when prompted. Close the Network Connections dialog. In the
system tray at the upper right corner, find the NetworkManager icon
(hover the mouse pointer over each of the icons there and read the
tooltips that pop up - when you find one that mentions the word
"network" in its tooltip, that's the one). Right-click the icon, click
the Enable Networking option (which is currently checked). Wait a
couple of seconds, then right-click the same icon again, and click the
same option again. Once your network connection is re-established, try
using Empathy, or some application besides Firefox. What happens?

Ed,

Bingo! thank you very much. I did as instructed and used the Automatic DHCP
addresses and entered the server addresses and it worked both for the wired
and wireless access. I now have a fully operational pendrive.

many many thanks fopr you help.

Robert

(huh? didn't understand that...) anyway, you can just use the OpenDNS
or Google Public DNS server IP addresses I mentioned before.

Thanks a lot especially to Ed. there were two parts to the solution in the end . to save everybody reading all the text this was a) to change the IPv 6 statement to TRUE from false, and then to use Automatic DHCP addresses only and entering the IP addresses for the open servers in the network connections. Result i now have a fully operational pendrive.
