To a large extent Linux doesn't work that way. Many "drivers" are just installed in the kernel, so you don't need to install them separately.

The major exeptions are proprietary video e.g. nvidia or ATI and proprietary wireless.

What you should do is try it! There are two different install disks - the Desktop and the Alternate. The Desktop disk is a LiveCD and can be run entirely from your CD-Rom, without affecting your Hard Drive at all ---unless you tell it to install. (The Alternate disk is a straight install.)

Get the Desktop disk and just give it a go. If it works than an install should work, or be made to work.

Have you seen "How To Control Fan Speeds in Ubuntu" on http://tuxtweaks.com/2008/08/how-to-control-fan-speeds-in-ubuntu/

Is this relevant?
