Please send us the full terminal output from step 3 and step 4 from this procedure:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

Using the Terminal output from those two steps, I may be able to pinpoint the root cause of the problem.

Please also send us the full terminal output from step 4 from this procedure:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

You only sent the output from step 3, but not from step 4

    Status: Open => Needs information

Mark Rijckenberg requested for more information:
Please also send us the full terminal output from step 4 from this
procedure:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

You only sent the output from step 3, but not from step 4

Well, according to all the output you sent me, I can find no good reason why your sound controls would show "dummy output". You should be able to control the sound mixer controls using alsamixer or gnome-alsamixer.

Is sound in all applications working correctly? If sound is working correctly, then the "dummy output" seems like a cosmetic issue and should be safely ignored....

The 'dummy output' notice appeared at ramndom. At times I had sound, at other times I had silence. Something in my system was causing the problem, but I don't know what. I upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 about 10 days ago, and this may have caused the problem. In the meantime I have reinstalled a flash player and everything seems to be working fine now.

Thank you very much for your help and advice.
