Hi :)

Do you have an Ubuntu Cd? If so please try booting up a LiveCd session before trying to install it
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
Please let us know how this goes

Also do you know the machines cpu speed and ram-size?

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi,

Try to check the liveCD for defects (you'll find this choice from the liveCD boot menu).

The problem that arose could also have to do with your CD/DVD drive, if it's already old, or with its ability to read the CD (if it has been burned at a too high speed).

Hi :)

Yes, knowing that at least the LiveCd works is a good indication that most of your hardware works well with Ubuntu and that the cd kinda works. As always tho Vu Do Quynn is spot on about perhaps trying this guide to see if you can improve cd burning, it is a little different as you are creating a bootable cd rather than a data cd so some details might be slightly different

Note that it is worth doing an md5sum check, its a little bit fiddly first time but doesn't take long. Also the Disk integrity check is worth doing although it takes ages but is easy to setup lol

Do you have access to an external cd/dvd-drive or could you borrow one for a day? If you have an old machine you could borrow the cd/dvd drive out of that if you are comfortable messing around inside the case. Beware of frying components with natural static we all have on our fingers and clothes. Also be care of sharp edges inside the case and avoid getting an electric shock too of course. If you know what you are doing then it's fairly easy but there are a few things to be careful of obviously.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
