Unable to upload AND use flash players, cannot view sites like youtube video's.

Asked by tneevel

I am not a techno person so a lot of the previous answers mean nothing to me. The only reason I have Ubunto with firefox is because my laptop crashed and a friend uploaded this because it is free. I am unable to view video files like youtube for example. I have uploaded from Adobe the flash players it said I needed but it still doesn't work. I don't know how to fix it or what to do, about ready to throw this computer away.

Hi,

Click on the menu "Applications" and at the bottom of the list you'll see either "Add/Remove..." or "Ubuntu Software Center", depending on your Ubuntu version.

Select the menu entry to launch the graphical software installation.

In the new opened window, make sure that "All the available applications" are selected (it's in a dropdown menu that shows by default something like "Applications supported by Canonical"), then in the search field type "ubuntu-restricted". This will show up a package named "ubuntu-restricted-extras" which you should select for installation. You'll need at some time to provide your own password as only the superuser "root" can install software on the system. You'll need a working internet connexion as ths package will download about 50 MB of stuff, including the working flash plugin, microsoft truetype fonts and Java.

After ubuntu-restricted-extras is installed, you'll be able to watch youtube videos with Firefox.

You may wish to install VLC (type vlc in the search field of Ubuntu Software Center) to listen to mp3, view mp4 files etc.

Hi :)

To solve the immediate problem please work through this worksheet
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
This should be worked through immediately (or soon) after every install of Ubuntu to deal with copyright issues for whichever country you happen to live in. I keep the non-free components until i can get more used to the system and go completely
free = OpenSource.

It does take a little time to get used to it but when you do then you will find that Ubuntu is faster, safer and much more reliable than Windows. The trouble is in getting there, it takes a few weeks to get used to it.

Generally people want to push you into doing exactly what you feel, throwing older hardware away. Who profits from that? You? Ubuntu works well on top-end machines but also can bring older machines back to life too. Once you get used to it you will find that you don't need to keep buying new bits of kit that start failing so quickly. With Ubuntu anything you do buy lasts a lot longer.

If you have already followed Vu Do Quynh's advice then you will find that you have already done most/all of the worksheet but it doesn't hurt to run through it again. The Medibuntu page is excellent at collecting together most of the issues to do with multimedia. It is rare for people to find they need to do more after completing it but it does happen sometimes.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

I tried going through these instructions but it didn't have "Ubunto-Restricted" anything. I uploaded other players but they didn't work either. Thanks for trying.

Hi :)

Please follow through all the steps in this guide
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
but leave out the step about removing non-free components if you can. The guide should add the restricted extras to your install and then things should get easier

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
