Cursor themes for Ubuntu?

Asked by Delan Azabani

I'm sure this has been asked a million times, but I couldn't find the answers.
1. Is it possible to have different cursors/cursor themes in Ubuntu?
2. If so, where can I find cursors for Ubuntu?
3. If so, how do I install cursor themes?
4. If the installation method is command-line, is there a GUI frontend for cursor management that I can install and test?

I'm going to make these assumptions: 1) your using Karmic ("should" work in 9.04, 9.10, 10.04 as well) and 2) you are using Ubuntu.

System / Preferences / Appearance - on the Theme tab (probably the one opened by default) - click the Customize button at the bottom. Click the Pointer tab at the top - select a different pointer from Default - try redglass. Does the pointer instantly change to red? If yes - great. If no, you must have Compiz turned on - click the Close button on Customize Theme window. Click on the Visual Effects tab of the Appearance Preferences window - select None. Does the pointer instantly change to red? If yes - great. If no, I have no idea.

Note - even with Compiz turned on, although the pointer doesn't change, if you move the mouse on top of certain windows you may notice the red "I" for text input.

So, can you change your cursor/pointer theme? Yes. Can you change your cursor/pointer theme with Compiz turned on? Well, "I don't know how" or if it is possible. If you find a way - let me know ;)

Best of luck,
George

Thanks so much, it worked perfectly. At the moment I don't know whether or not it works in Compiz because of this bug:
