compiz 3d cube and ubuntu nbr

Asked by JohnOConghaile

I have a gateway netbook LT2032u and have loaded ubuntu nbr 9.10 onto it. I am definately a noob when it comes to linux. I have compiz on here and I have selected preferences for the 3d cube and nothing at all changes. This has an intel 950 accelerator on here. I am at a loss on how to get this working.

John,

The Compiz cube is really intended to be used with the regular Gnome desktop. Netbook Remix provides an alternative to the regular Gnome interface. While a small amount of the compiz settings will work in NBR, I don't think the Cube is one of them.

If you have the space, and wish to, you could install the ubuntu-desktop meta package which would add the regular Ubuntu style desktop (as well as all other typically installed Ubuntu packages), where the 3D cube can used.

Good luck,
George

G'day John
well welcome to Linux to start with,it is a bit of a learning curve, but what is new, thats life.

to get compiz working you need to turn on visual effects. this will make thing all pretty cool.
to do this right click on the desktop then change desktop background then click on the tab saying Visual Effects click Extra.
If you video drivers are not installed to do this it should start to download and install them.
but sometime it will say no can do (ok not quite like that) go to system-Administration-Hardware Drivers, this should fix the driver problem, reboot after you have installed them.

go back to the Visual Effect tab.and click the Extra button again it will do it's thing and should work after that.
If you have done all of that all ready well I did a lot of typing for nothing lol.

if the effect are working right click on the workspace switcher, go to preferences set it to 1 row and 4 columns.
rotating the wheel on the mouse should make it spin and pushing it down, well find out for yourself that the fun bit.....
l did have a problem getting it to spin so here is the fix for that
