locked up Ubuntu 9.10

Asked by jasyn lillie

I am totally new to Linux and never had a problem with Windows, EVER!! Since recently saving all data on CD's and converting over to this Ubuntu Linux 9.10 all it does is lock up...You can move the cursor but cannot click on anything and have to keep hard power offs, even if on the internet!! Please someone help me, I even tried to load Ubuntu 9.04 figuring maybe I could run an older version but it does the same thing...Also I get "ghost windows" behind everything that I try to open up...PLEASE HELP!! I am unable now to go back to Windows unless I purchase Win 7 which is $350 depending on where you get it...Thanks to anyone who is out there....

Could you do the following, please?

1. Boot the computer from the Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD and choose the memory test "memtest" option. Allow the test to proceed through at least one full test cycle, preferably two or three, and see if it locks up or reports errors. Tell us what happens.

2. Boot the computer with Ubuntu ("Try it out") from the Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD and try to use Ubuntu for some time, at least longer than it takes to lock up when booted from the hard disk. Tell us what happens.

3. Could you describe your computer? Is it a desktop or a laptop, is it new or old (how old?) and what kind of hardware do you have in it - that is, the system's technical specifications - the CPU brand and model, what chipset, what display/graphics card, how much RAM, how much hard disk space, and if you know, what brand and model of hard disk?

4. How long after you start it up does it take to lock up? Do lock-ups occur quicker when you power-off and restart the computer after it has locked up one or more times?

Added another vid card and everything seems fine, thanks though I'll keep you on my top list of "helpers"...

Oh - so in this case it was actually a hardware problem... ? :-)

Well, good to know you solved it.

Cheers,
Ed.
