Everything

Asked by donald.d52@gmail.com

OK, I have been a supporter of the Linux idea for years. An open-source OS seemed great. In fact, I even bought the Debian disks to help support it.

Last weekend my son & I built me a new PC. We loaded Ubuntu as an OS. Three times...

Idiotic Grub, not matter how often we told it to load from the hard drive, insisted on looking for a floppy (how 1972, Dude) and we had to do the Command Line over & over to get it to stop.

Now I am afraid to update Grub, or anything else from Ubuntu, for that matter.

I had to go to 2 different places just to enable Java.

Nothing works as it should.

I think I offended the Ubuntu community by daring to suggest that their baby was less than perfect, despite the ear in the middle of its forehead, as I cannot even ask a question there, now.

So, What do you do when NOTHING works?

Well, for one, you don't try to insult the community and then demand help. You can either provide actual data that we can try to help you with or you can use another OS. I'm sorry that it hasn't worked smoothly for you, but spouting a tantrum on here is not acceptable.

Don't know how much assistance I can be on this, but don't think the current answer is quite right either. So will start by asking what version of Ubuntu you are loading, and if you have tried the Update package to see what it offers.
Personally, I sometimes wonder if I wouldn't be better off in Fedora Core, but I've put too much time into this and have Ubuntu 9.10 working in every IMPORTANT aspect. I still find a few minor issues that aren't quite right, but nothing that really matters much.
Most of the updates that work well are through the Synaptic Package Manager and/or the Update Manager, both under System -> Administration.

I'd start all over again, would be something new to me that *nix users give up ;-)
(Although I've installed Karmic Alpha and since then no issues here.)
And I like Wikis.

I'd research hd compatibility.

Maybe try Alternate CD.

The "no floppy" issue is unfortunately known.

Since you're familiar with CLI I'd trust in you to even test Lucid Beta-2, since Alpha no really heavy issues, just needs a little patience (end of April) and sometimes restart and update via CLI.

I'm sorry if my comment came across as an insult to anyone, it was certainly not intended to be that. It was simply a cry of frustration on my part.

But I did not demand, or even ask for, assistance, although I do thank those here who have offered their suggestions.

I have, in fact, already given up and tonight will be loading Windows 7, despite my dislike for being beholden, fiscally or otherwise, to Microsoft.

I still think an Open Source OS is a great idea, for those who have the skills & knowledge to use it. Unfortunately, I do not have those skills, or it seems, the patience to learn them.

Can you help with this problem?
