Is your video card capable of OpenGL rendering? Many of the screen-savers use this technology.

Hi :)

Without updates? Can you try the 10.04 as a LiveCd session before updating and see if the screen-savers work?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

Do you have full compiz desktop effects enabled or does that break the screen-savers too?

Applications (?) - System - Preferences - Appearance - "Visual Effects" (i think?)

Tom :)

Hi :)

I notice you have another current question in here and it seems from that the Visual Effects (compiz) have not been able to be enabled either.

I'm really glad to hear you have been testing this as a dual-boot! There are a lot of problems with it on your system! Can you find the "System Testing" & use it to mail a bad report to bug-squad here? I think it's in

Applications - System - Administration - "System Testing"

Specific bug-reports against specific things would be great but possibly too time-consuming to post!

I have always had troubles with 64bit versions so nowadays i stick with 32bit versions which all seem to run so smoothly. I think if you want to see what a working system looks like then the 32bit version is well worth trying. Also i am curious to know if you have tried the Lubuntu derivative that is not officially supported (i think)
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=lubuntu
This is meant to be even lighter and faster than Xubuntu

If you don't have time or inclination for further testing then i would just like to say a big thank you for trying this out so far and also sorry this hasn't worked out well so far.

Many regards from
Tom :)

you need to take a look at xubuntu it is not set up the same as ubuntu . in the xubuntu set up the hardware drivers are installed but in the nivida x server it says there no drivers installed .

Hi :)

Sorry i haven't got back to you about anything in last 18hours! Did you try Lubuntu? Did you manage to post bug-reports about the screen-savers?

Regards from
Tom :)

Ahh great :)) So you were only testing the Xubuntu 64bit 10.04 just to test it?
Superb, thanks for trying that one out then :)
