external microphone jack not working on ubuntu 9.10

hello everyone!
my ubuntu 9.10 simply doesn't recognize my external microphone, whatever that is.
i searched on the internet, i tried with alsa, all possible updates of function.
i found this thread

but i can't honestly understand if they found a solution, and what it is.
i can use the terminal but very little.
if someone can help me i would be very thankful

hey sorry your having trouble

goto your system > admin. > software source

open>password> check all boxes>close>reload

goto application> add/remove software(ubuntu packages) ## its at the bottom of the list

open to music or multimedia and try pulse audio *********capture,volume control,output all three

load>when you open pulse volume now you should see a preference in the box select to display mic or line in

it is muted unmute it and rase the volume you should be all set
