in your startup items:

system -> preferences -> startup items

add a new item to run:

compiz --replace

The name and comment can be anything you like. This wil make compiz run at login.

Isn't this rather a hack? Or should there actually always be a startup item "compiz --replace" which was lost (somehow) during the upgrade to Lucid and which now causes the issue?
