upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04

Asked by gian

In Ubuntu 8.04 update manager tells me that you can not upgrade to 10.04 even though it is selected LTS in
Software Sources -> Updates, but if I select the option normal release in Software Sources -> Updates tells me that I can upgrade to 8.10. Why?
thanks
Greetings

Received knowledge is that you can only upgrade from one version to the next e.g. 8.04 to 8.10, 8.10 to 9.04, 9.04 to 9.10etc. I have known of ONE person who successfully jumped versions.

If you want to go to 10.04 - save your Home to an external USB disk, if you can. Then do a fresh install of 10.04 and copy and paste your Home.

Hi,

What arochester said was also what I thought.

However it is possible to upgrade from 8.04 LTS direct to 10.04 LTS. It is indicated here:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading

and I did it myself.

What you need to do is to fully update 8.04 by running the update manager. You may also check in Software sources, in the third (middle) tab named something like Updates, the last drop-down menu at the bottom of the window which lets you show which type of upgrade version is available : Never, Normal, only LTS (if the choice is normal then you are likely to be presented only with the next version 8.10), if LTS is selected, then you should be able to see that 10.04 LTS is available for upgrade.

For upgrading to 10.04 LTS, you can also download the alternate iso file and mount it locally like instructed on the page linked above. That works well and better than from a CDRM (faster).

Can you help with this problem?
