Asked by Omar. P

Hi, how do you install Ubuntu to a computer that doesn't have any Ubuntu versions at all. I want install Ubuntu 10.04 to a desktop computer that I haven't used in a long time, it has and old version of windows. I tried by inserting the CD and restarting the computer, but it doesn't do anything. So can it be installed.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you check the CD for defects?

Ubuntu can definitely be installed on this computer, provided it meets the minimum system requirements. Ubuntu can be installed a number of ways, with or without booting to a CD. In your case however, I'll try to walk you through the CD process. I'm guessing your computer is not set to boot from a CD by default. Please try this:
1. Insert the CD
2. Restart the computer
3. While the computer boots (before the windows screen appears) repeatedly press the F8 key until a prompt appears asking you what device to boot to. Select the CD drive.
4. The ubuntu disk should boot, follow the onscreen prompts to install Ubuntu.

Note, if the F8 key does not work please restart the computer and press the "delete" key until the BIOS menu appears. Follow the instructions in the following documentation to change the first boot device to the CD-ROM drive.
https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/installation-guide/i386/pre-install-bios-setup.html#boot-dev-select

If this does not work there are many other ways to get Ubuntu onto your computer, so don't worry. We can try booting from a USB drive or installing from a simple downloadable installer (wubi). I'll be happy to help you with that if the CD does not work or is too complicated.

Ah. Well I don't know how to get past a BIOS password, so I think you'll have to go with the ubuntu installer, available here: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/windows-installer

This is fairly simple to use and should work just fine for you. Just boot into windows, download it, and run it.

Can you help with this problem?
