I would like to update the Ubuntu to kubuntu but can't seem to know how abouts doing so with out losing Data. I went to Kubuntu wiki page and tried to do a install but it failed. Is there any SAFE way do so in the Synaptic Package or Wiki page that would do so. If anyone could help I would be greatly appreciated THANK YOU.

Thanks peter i was able to find the kubuntu-destktop in the synaptic package. When i tried to insall i got this error messages

E: emifreq-applet: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2
E: clvm: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 3
E: redhat-cluster-suite: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

It aslo now on exiting the OS it hangs up and stops at " STOPPING CLUSTER SERVICES MANAGER" for around a min or so then it exits out of the OS.
The Kubuntu didn't install only the splash screen had changed during reboot after insall.

If anyone could help with these issues i would appreciated it.

Thank You.....

Can you install via the command line and post all output here?

Do this using the command given earlier.

I made an error in my command. Please use:

$ sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop

instead of

$ sudo aptitude install kubuntu-destktop

Forget about Synaptic. Work on the command line for this.

Do you actually use clvm and redhat-cluster-suite?

If not, can you remove them?

Why did you install the redhat-cluster-suite package? Where did it come from?

 I don't NO the only installed i have done are form the Synaptic package in ubuntu administration drop down. Is there a another way to remove this it seem to be causing the OS on exit to freeze and goto a command line exit and then exits out. and i get some error that related to Cluster stop type. I think i may have installed it from the synptic package the OS is running good but on some installs of programs and removal of them this Clvm causes them to crash and not install or remove. I tried to remove it from the Synaptic Package but it failed i really do know how it even go there just wold like to be able to uninstall it or remove it so i could ugrade to Kubuntu. Thanks once again ..

Somehow your system has broken packages.

Provide the output of this command:

$ grep ^deb /etc/apt/sources.list

When you boot the system and the kdm window manager comes up you need to choose KDE as session type. There is an option for this to the left of where you enter you username and password.
