Ubuntu server hardware compatibility

Asked by Kostik

Our company provides personal services and our web-site is our main resource. We have a complicated infrastructure behind it: few servers (both physical and virtual) to support the database, LDAP etc. We used to use RedHat on our severs for years but we would like to migrate to Ubuntu (mainly because Ubuntu is much easier to use and to support). We are going to start with two new servers and we have a choice (between IBM System x3550 M3 and HP ProLiant DL360 G7). I could not find anything about Ubuntu certification for both of them. So my question is: is Ubuntu Server OS compatible (and certified) on IBM System x3550 M3 or HP ProLiant DL360 G7? Does it come with all necessary drivers etc.?

If you run:

sudo lshw > ~/hardware.txt

then paste the file here, we can review

We do not have Ubuntu installed on those servers yet: we need information about compatibility and certification _before_ buying any hardware.

Thank you for the link. As I see IBM x3550 is certified.
But I still need information about HP ProLiant DL360 G7. Is it compatible? Will it be certified? Does Ubuntu come with all necessary drivers?

I would say so. I'd contact IBM to see but if its certified its usually a good sign. Either it will have the drivers or there are open drivers available

Kostik,

Here's the the list of HP's: http://webapps.ubuntu.com/certification/make/HP/

I see the DL360 G5 / G6, but I'm not seeing the DL360 G7 being listed yet.

You may want to contact HP directly about the certification status on the DL360 G7. If they've certified the G5/G6, it's a reasonable assumption ( but only they would know for sure ) the G7 would be in the cert loop as well.

As was pointed out, take a look at this:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/546091

before buying an IBM X3550. The hardware certification list says the X3550 is certified with Ubuntu, all relevant versions. Yup, that's true, but the current iteration of the X3550 is the M3, and that most certainly does NOT work with recent Ubuntu releases, due to Bug 546091. I currently have an X3550 M3 that is sitting there collecting dust because I can't install Ubuntu on it. I think I might return it.

I believe that bug will be fixed in the 10.04.2 release coming in a few months, but until then, be careful!

Can you help with this problem?
