You probably have "auto login" enabled.

Check in "System>Administration>Login Screen" (probably not the real names, my system is in french, i'm quickly translating)

Then you have an option to auto login a user. Uncheck it, and it will ask for the password again.

Yes I know this but I use to not have to pick which user. It would load my homescreen and then a little screen showed up and ask for my login. then i would hit it in

Sorry for the late reply Mike.

Just to clarify, there are two ways to connect to your account:
-autologin, it will automatically open an account (not asking about the login/password)
-manual login, you have to enter at least your password, maybe your login

Apparently, you have set the first solution, so it's opening automatically your account.
However, it will NOT unlock your keyring. That would be very dangerous. If someone steals your computer, he would have access to all the passwords stored in the keyring. So Ubuntu lets you login in automatically BUT still protects the passwords. That's why if, for instance, your computer is connecting to a wireless network, it's asking for your password: the wireless network requires a password, your keyring is closed, so Ubuntu asks for your password to have access to the passwords and let you connect to the wireless network. So I think that's your case, it's already in your homescreen, but just asks for the password (not the login).

I don't know if this behaviour is what you want. I'm not sure if it's possible to let the computer access to some passwords (like the wireless password, not really a huge security problem if it's exposed) without entering the account password.

Can you help with this problem?
