Cannot disable the CD-ROM/DVD Source Repository

Asked by Stephen Smith

I am running Ubuntu 8.04.4 and always select updates received over the Internet from Ubuntu. It is my only operating system.
My computer system is an AMD K6-III cpu @ 333Mhz, 512 Mb RAM, 6Gb Hard Disk.

I am trying to install an update of a Hewlett Packard Printer Driver (HPLIP 3.10.6.run). I followed the instructions for installing a ".run package" and selected "Properties>Permissions>Allow executing file as program." Then I used the Terminal to install the package.

The installation process went well until I received an Error message that I needed to "Disable the CD-ROM/DVD Source Repository." I discovered in the Support documentation a suggestion of selecting System>Administration>Software Sources>Ubuntu Software. At the bottom of the screen, there is a box which is labeled "Installable from CD-ROM/DVD." According to the internet Support documentation, there is SUPPOSED to be a "Check box" to allow me to Disable this source option. This "Check box" is NOT on my screen. I cannot figure out how to disable the CD-ROM/DVD Source Repository. I even took apart my computer and unplugged the DVD Burner drive so that on startup the computer would realize that it did not have a DVD drive. This idea did not work.

Any ideas as to how to disable the CD-ROM/DVD Source Repository so that I can complete the installation process for this HP Printer Driver??

Thank you for your help. Stephen Smith

I've just booted into LiveCD, to see where it is in Hardy.
Checkmark is in the 'third party' software tab, in
system administration -> software sources

I am so stupid!!! My problem was created because I failed to properly follow the installation instructions provided by Hewlet Packard. What I FAILED to notice was the instruction that "IF you do not have the installation ISO disk ("Live Disk" for Ubuntu 8.04.4) in the DVD drive, THEN disable the "CD-ROM/DVD Source Repository." If the disk IS in the DVD drive, you have NO PROBLEM. I discovered this fact when I tried the installation procedure one more time. I have finally installed HPLIP 3.10.6 successfully.

Sam : Thank you for your help, but my software does NOT have the checkmark that you discovered in the "third party" software tab. I still cannot figure out how to disable the "CD-ROM/DVD Source Repository", but at this juncture, it is unnecessary and I don't need to disable it.

Thanks again. Stephen Smith
