Ubuntu 10.10 Beta

Asked by peter

Hello

Ubuntu 10.10 Beta is great, much more stable than 10.04. But when I tried it, I got view problems:

1: Rhytmbox couldn't find the plugins for MP3.
2: Totem couldn't find the plugins for videos.
3. Synaptic couldn't install Amarok. The download of the files failed.
4: Firestarter is not included in Synaptic.

Are these issues given because I runned the CD only for a demonstration? Thanks in advance.
Peter

I check yesterday 64bits version from a USB Live key, and get the same codec issue. So should I raise this week-end a bug ?

To get plugins you need to install

ubuntu-restricted-extras

Those plugins (for MP3 for example) cannot be included on the CD for legal reasons as some countries do not allow them to be used so the ISO is a one-glove-fits-all approach. You can install them once the OS is installed (or in the liveCD if you have enough RAM) and get ful media playback.

Firestarter IS in Maverick:

(13:27:53) ubottu: firestarter (source: firestarter): gtk program for managing and observing your firewall. In component universe, is optional. Version 1.0.3-8ubuntu1 (maverick), package size 406 kB, installed size 1964 kB

So you need to enable universe repo and it will be available.

If you can give the output of the command you used to install Amarok, I can advise. If you use KUbuntu then Amarok is already installed.

Thanks, actionparsnip.

Univers repo was in 10.10 Beta enabled.

In Synaptic I searched Amarok and installed it. The download of the files failed.

You can add the codecs to the ISO using:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomization

And add the codecs you need etc. I suggest you use KUbuntu if you like amarok or you will need to pull in a LOT of Qt libs as amarok use Qt and not gtk.

Thanks for the hint. So I'll collect the codecs in the 10.10 Beta version but I'm not sure if it works. I'm not sure if I can add the codecs like in 8.04.

Amarok was only an alternative because Rhytmbox didn't work with 10.10 Beta.

I have the normal Ubuntu version - not KUbuntu.

sure, the metapackage is in maverick and will give you the codecs you need. I suggest you grab kubuntu if you like amarok
