can't install ubuntu on my lap top. it works on my desk top so i know its a working copy

Asked by Coldfront

I've tried a copy of Ubuntu 7.10 and 7.04 i386 , Ubuntu amd 64 7.10 and also Kubuntu. Now I've ran the live cd on my desk top which is about 5 years old and it works fine. I can get it up and running. however i've tried all the versions on my laptop and when it will actually make it through the boot up it just goes to a blank screen. most of the times it doesn't even make it that far though.
Now I know the copies are good because I used them on the other computer. My laptop is a
Campaq presario v6000
1 gig of ram
amd 64 x2 processor
nvidia GeForce Go 6150 graphics card
Now I've never used anything from linux before but after seeing what it can do and my complete and utter hatred for the completely unholy anti-christ that is bill gates and microsoft. I have chosen to make the switch. However as much as it's hard to admit....I basically have minimal knowledge about how all this works. I'm basically just trying to teach myself. So after this is figured out any other tips and help would be greatly appreciated.

works great thank you! however I'm trying to get my wireless connection hooked up and that's a whole other headache. I know I'm a n00b but alas we all had to start somewhere.
any tips on why this is giving me a headache? plus my desktop effects aren't working either, I'm sure it's just something simple that I have to do
