Emulating Windows Software

Asked by Bamnana

I'm using Ubuntu about a month and I want to convert completely from windows XP to Ubuntu. But, I can't do so cause I'm using some software in windows that don't exist in linux. I know that there some emulators out there so I tried Wine. The problem is that it runs SOME of the applications and with disappointing performance. Is there other emulators I could try? I really need to use Cubase in this lovable os and not in windows' capitalism. So can you suggest something about it?

I'm thinking about running Ardour 2 instead Cubase , but this is a last resort action yet, because I've put some money in Steinberg :)

Suggest anything that may come useful.

Well there are basically three options you can try to have windows apps on your ubuntu machine.

The first is to use an emulator like Wine or CrossOver, which you appeared to have tried with unsatisfying results.

The second way is as Rodrigo Donado suggested - use a virtual machine. I personally prefer VirtualBox over VMware. Here's instructions to set either one up:

And the third way is to dual boot.

Unfortunately the second and third options means that you will have to purchase your own copy of Windows.

Thank you, I'll check CrossOver and I hope I get better results. If I don't, I'll install virtualbox. Anyway, I'll post my results for users that are interesting in Cubase in Ubuntu.

You can ask Steinberg if and when they make cubase for Linux users available, so that they are aware, that there are users who want to switch to linux.

I doupt that Steinberg is willing to do this for linux users. Steinberg doesn't even allow redistribution of VST SDK which is free anyways. In any case, I'll sent an email.
