Initial installation problems

Asked by Andrew Marshall

I tried to install 7.04 on a friend's brand spanking new machine but have come across an error message that means the square root of nothing to me. I have tried using a downloaded copy of the installation as well as the official CD that came in the post, but just get the same message:

Busybox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-3 ubuntu3) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off(initramfs)

I used the downloaded copy to install on my own machine and had no problems.

Many thanks

At what point does this happen? Are you loading the live CD, or is this post-install?

Hello,
hmm... Earlier, I tried one other thing though which seems to make a difference. I switched on the single processor support which according to my understanding turns off the dual core and only one "core" is available. I did not follow through the whole installation but I was able to to go to the point where basic desktop with install link was available.

It will be interesting to find out if ubuntu has the same problem with all Pentium D processors or this problem is specific to the mother board I am using... (same mother board..)
Change to single processor mode in the bios settings please...

Hope it helps,

br,

Bhavani Shankar.

I went into the 'Start or Install Ubuntu' option. It then said it was opening the lInux kernel. The error message appeared after that.

Not sure what most of this means or if it's relevant but here's the spec of the machine:

Acer Aspire M1610/L7-AU5L

Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor E2160
(1.8GHz/1MB L2 Cache/800MHz FSB/EM64T)
1GB DDR2 up to 4 GB
250GB S-ATA 7200RPM HDD
9-in-1 media card reader
SIS 672 +SIS 968 chipset
Intergrated SIS Mirage 3 graphics
Gigabit ethernet. Wale-on-LAN ready
Linux program console mode

See, Firstly go to the bios and There will be an option on whether to enable/disable the single processor mode; which according to my understanding turns off the dual core and only one "core" is available.

Bhavani Shankar.

Thanks. The intended machine is a few kms away from me and won't be
able to access it for at least a day, but will let you know what
happens.
