Gutsy 3d cube & 3d windows with Separate desktop backgrounds

Asked by Paul Parr

Hello Fellow Ubuntu'ers,

I finally figured out how to get a 4 sided cube, but I can't figure out how to enable 3d windows that float in front of the cube.
I also wat to know if there is a way to have each desktop have different desktop background, I couldn't figure this out in Feisty or Gutsy. I must be missing something. I recall years ago I could do this on other distros.

Any idea's?

Thanks

Pau

To have 3D Windows floating above the cube you need to enable the "3D Windows" plug-in. I think you might be able to find it in Feisty. Gutsy's 'compiz-fusion-plugin-extras' package doesn't seem to have it.

You can perhaps add the "deb http://download.tuxfamily.org/3v1deb feisty eyecandy" and try. Am not sure if it'd be all fine to do that on Gutsy though. But on Feisty, it'll gives you the "3D Windows" plug-in definitely.

About the multiple wallpaper thing:

Go to CCSM (CompizConfig Settings Manager) and go to the "Desktop Cube" plugin page. Under the Appearance tab, load each of the 4 wallpaper locations as required into the Background Images frame.

Now run gconf-editor via the Terminal and go to Apps > Nautilus > Preferences and disable the "show_desktop" value.

Note: Disadvantage of doing this on Gnome is that you lose all your Desktop Icons. Cause Nautilus doesn't show them anymore. But to get them back you can ofcourse, enable that above mentioned value again but the cube wallpapers will appear only if its disabled.

Thanks....odd how KDE lets you have different desktop backgrounds on each desktop but Gnome doesn't by default.
