Hi Ihab,

run the following command in terminal.

lspci | grep VGA

Most probably you will find some information on the internet how to proceed further.

If you have an ATI card you can use this link https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI .

I had the same problem, are you using the restricted drivers for you video card, try going to System--> Administration --> Restricted Drivers Manager and enabling the drivers listed there. Restart and try changing it again.

Good morning all,
What is the graphics driver that you're using? You can find out by going to System -> Admin. -> Screens and Graphics under the "Graphics Card" tab. If you're using the "expermental" intel driver you may wish to use the i810 driver instead for the time being.

Would you mind attaching your xorg.conf file? It can be found at /etc/X11/xorg.conf and opened in the Applications -> Accesories -> Text Editor (read only)

Cheers,
Kristopher Ives

The problem is that this graphic card is blacklisted by Compiz in Ubuntu 7.10.

You should modify the script /usr/bin/compiz, commenting out the line where your graphic card is inserted in the black list.

I also suggest switching to Ubuntu 8.04, where Compiz doesn't have this limitation.

If you don't know how to modify the script (I don't know your level of technical knowledge), you can follow these instructions:

1) type in the terminal: "sudo gedit /usr/bin/compiz"

2) Search in the file the lines about the black list. There should be a pair of lines with intel graphic cards. Uncomment them (meaning: put a '#' at the beginning of the line.

Save the file.

Restart the system. Let me know if it still doesn't work.

Bye

What do you mean?
Do you simply want to install XP as dual boot with Ubuntu 8.04?
Or you want XP to have the same 3d effects as Ubuntu?

If you are referring to the second option, I don't think XP has such 3d stuff... probably you are thinking about Windows Vista. I obviously suggest to not install Windows "anything".
You made a good choice installing Ubuntu, stick with it and you will find all the satisfaction that Windows can't give.

Bye
