Scans cannot be opened

I scanned some papers and saved them. I tried to email them from my gmail account to someone who uses XP and they couldn't open them.

The scans have the following file format: out.pnm

The pnm format is quite standard http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_pixmap and I believe there are viewers available for windows.

I usually convert it to a .jpeg or some other compressed format when passing it on to others. I believe you can do this in xsane or with the GIMP quite easily.
