Installation Questions - Programs

Asked by theWayner

I am about to take the plunge but before I do, I am requesting recommendations and or info on the following:

1. Is anyone using Quicken 8 under Ubuntu's WINE or do you have to purchase Crossover?

2. Best MP3 player/Media player

3. Recommendation for a substitute for Photoshop CS2

4. Do you have to de-frag hd under Ubuntu?

5. File manager?

6. Program to "clean" up HD of files similar to Disk Cleanup under windows?

Thanks

1. AppDB says Quicken 2006 Deluxe seems to work fine over Wine. But here's a list to all Quickens for you to check compatibilities of (with Wine):
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=107

2. RhythmBox Audio Player comes bundled along like an iTunes replacement. But there's also XMMS and Exaile for audio and MPlayer and Xine for videos, apart from the bundled Totem Movie Player.

3. GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) comes bundled along yet again and is a fantastic and more powerful replacement to Photoshop as a freeware. You can use a package called 'GIMP-Shop' to get the Photoshop look into it.

4. No, EXT3 hardly needs to be de-fragmented since it doesn't fragment like NTFS/FAT do.

5. Nautilus is the default File Manager of GNOME in Ubuntu and it should be fine enough for a lot of tasks you wish to perform with ease.

6. Linux doesn't keep garbage like Windows does, there is absolutely no need of a tool like Disk Cleanup :)

Can you help with this problem?
