This is not the ultimate answer. but I sympathise
I had the same problem. The same machine (Advent desktop with wireless card ) worked fine with xp and ubuntu breezy badger but not 7.10
The top panel showed the whirly thing going round and sucessfully connected showing 76% to my sky wireless broadband. but web page failed to load or synaptic update failed to connect. I got it all to work on my laptop no problems so would not give up.
Eventually in desperation found this support forum read through the messages and saw i was not alone.
almost finished a long winded message explaining the aboveand went back to check my facts before submitting and bu....r me it started working

so well impressed with this forum will come back again soon because my soundblaster card in same machine does the same

Regards

Chris ( still impresed with ubuntu rather thaan xp )Kirby

Hi,,,,

I am also having 1390 dell wireless mini pc card which came along with my Dell inspiron 6400. Yes I accept that it is a pain in neck trying to make this wireless work

if you are using ubuntu 7.10 then
just go to system ---> administration ---restricted manager and then enable the firmware which is listed in there for me it is bcm4311 so check which one u are using... and then it will automatically download and install provided you are connected to wired connection (lan)

then go to system --->synaptic package manager ---> type "ndiswrapper" and click on search.... u will get 3 files.... select all files... and then mark for installation...

once u finish that...you should download broadcom drivers .. (search in google (type bcmdrivers + your wireless card model bcm4311 or bcm4318 )

you need two files in broad com drivers...

one is bcmwl15.inf and .sys file two files from your driver file..

place these two on ur desktop....

then go to system --->windows wireless drivers ---> install new driver --> open --> bcmwl15.inf

thats.it...

once u do this whole procedure...u should be able to connect....

hope it works....

all the best...

Hi Sam
I am up and running with wirelss now while I was prparing a message for the
forum I went back to settings for network and Bingo it came up!
Appreciate your message.
I have to say this Uuntu forum with all the help I have had this last few
days has been great.
Pitty commercial software houses can't seem to manage it.
Regards
 and Thanks again
Chris
