cd /boot/grub

edit grub's "menu.lst". Let grub know where your new kernel is.

cheers

If the kernel is installed on ubuntu, you may type on the command prompt:

sudo update-grub

That would create menu.lst with all installed kernels.

Just check in synaptic package manager if kernel is really installed, and if it is, you can update grub this way.
