Unable to install last three versions of Ubuntu.

Asked by Fortunato Cardona

First of all, I am not a geek, so any answer provided please use plain English.

I have an Asus mobo (A8R32MVP - Deluxe) with an AMD Athlon64 3700+ cpu, RAID 1 configuration, two X1600XT ATI Crossfire (Pci-e 16) graphics boards, 3GB PC3200-400 RAM, and a Samsung SyncMaster 245BW LCD monitor.
Monitor is the only item which has changed since 7.04 attempted install.

I consider myself somewhat knowledgeable in dealing with computers. I have built seven different boxes and can install and tweak most software.

I have attempted to install both 32 and 64 bit Ubuntu versions (and other distros, also) and can not even get to view LiveCD. Mostly I get, if anything at all, a message about not finding graphics and then death. Sometimes I get a black screen with a blinking cursor.

I have WinXPPro64 also running in same box, on hard drives different from ones Ubuntu install attempts have been made, so I need to maintain RAID.

I do not want to give up on Linux, but can not afford the time I have wasted on it so far.

You guys/girls are my last sliver of hope.

In the words of a drowning man: HELP!!!!!!

Can you boot the 32 bit alternate install CD?

Have not attempted that as I understand alternate requires command line entries and I do not know enough about Linux to be able to do this comfortably.

Is there any way to be able to do this using gui?

You understood it wrong. There is no need to use command line entries in alternate.

It is just a different GUI, one that you use the keyboard instead of the mouse, but there are menus and options for everything and I managed to install many times using it without typing a single command.

It is faster too, and to the point.

Gee, thanks a lot for the info.

I will download one and try it.

Any suggestions?

Also, are there 64-bit alternates you would recommend?

I've had more trouble with 64bit versions than with 32bit ones.

And my benchmarks didn't result in any significant performance gain. Just a increase in memory usage.

So I am sticking with the 32bits versions, even on my 64bits machines.

YMMV Your Mileage May Vary.

I never did RAID, you will have to search for documentation on that, maybe the installer will autodetect, I just don't know. You can open another question for that if you like.

Can you help with this problem?
