Installation problem

Asked by bharrelson

I have a Dell Inspiron 2500 and my Windows XP Home is screwed up (again!). I'm tired of Windows all together and want to try another OS so I downloaded Ubuntu v. 7.10 onto a CD and tried to install it onto my computer. I got two errors listed:

[119.431.446] crc error

and

[119.434272] Kernel panic - not syning : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknown block (104,1).

I am totally new to Ubuntu so PLEASE dumb any answer down as much as possible. Thank you for your assistance.

Most probably (CRC Error), your CD was not burnt properly.

Check the ISO you downloaded by following instructions of MD5 here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM (Check the Windows XP part)

If verified successfully, burn the ISO at a lower speed on a fresh disc (Preferably 8x) and boot from the new disc. All should go fine.

If its not successful, you may have to re-download the ISO or fix it by using Torrents.

It'd also help if you provide us your PC details like Partitions, etc. In case the problem wasn't related to the disc.

Can you help with this problem?
