cannnot share files, cannot install smb or samba

Asked by odindio

I tried to share files on a newer installation of Gutsy Gibbon which is located on a regular desktop PC on a home network. But when I try to add a file to be shared, I get the following window

sharing services are not installed

you need to install at least either Samba or NFS in order to share your folders

 install unix neworks support (nfs)
 install windows network support (smb)

In this window - I click a button to install these but nothing installs, and the same window comes back up again repeatedly. I checked in synaptic packet manager and smb was installed. I decided to remove and reinstall it, but after removing it - it does not appear as an option to reinstall it. An option to install unix networks support is not in synaptic manager.

I got some advice to install samba. Currenly samba common is installed. No option for installing samba is available in synaptic manager.

how dow I fix this situation so I can share files?

In order to share files, you need also the package "samba", not only samba-common.

The package should be in the main repository, there you should find it inside the package manager.

I hope this helps.

As I stated in my problem "No option for installing samba is available in
synaptic packet manager." I did download samba from Samba's web site. I
unpacked it in a folder on the desktop. I'm not sure how to proceed next.

I found it by changing the software sources in synaptic packet manager.
Canonical-support open source software main needed to be checked.
