Is emerald still required after the fusion of compiz and beryl?

Asked by Shannon Fang

Hi I am having some nuisance with emerald window manager. It is quite easy to crash...

I wonder in Gutsy, do I still need to install emerald to be able to use the compiz themes I download from gnome-look.org? (those has a .emerald extension), if emerald is no longer needed, what is the replacement for using these (window border) theme in compiz-fusion?

Thanks!

If you want to use Emerald themes you still need the Emerald decorator installed, it does not form part of Compiz-Fusion (or Beryl originally.) The window decorator is an independant part from the window manager you use, however some decorators require a certain window manager, e.g. Emerald requires Compiz/Compiz-fusion.

On a related note, you may want to install the package "gnome-art" which will install an applet that will allow to centrally select/install gnome artwork/themes etc.

Thank you ByteJuggler. Then I will hope the emerald bugs are fixed asap... These bugs that are affecting me are:

1) crash from time to time
2) no auto restart after crash, and if I start it in a terminal, even I use &, I cannot close that terminal, if I close, emerald will be closed too.

I finally noticed that emerald ONLY affect window decoration, not all other "flashing" features of compiz. For any newbies, I would suggest NOT install emerald at all, there is little need to use it, except you want to mimic vista window borders which seems only available in emerald (unless you find a metacity vista-alike theme).

A good place for theme: http://www.gnome-look.org
