how to partition Ubuntu 7.10

Asked by swift240

Hi all,
I am using Ubuntu 7.10 on a 80 Gig HD.
I have used 15.2 Gig so far.
What I would like ot do is partition my HD like:-

5 gig MP3, 5 gig Radio Plays, 5 gig Video

How can I do this without messing my system up?

I did try QTParted but I got "No device found, maybe your not using root user"

And I have no idea how to overcome this.

TIA,

Mike.

WHY would you want to partition like that?
It is better to have a single "Data" partition and create folders for different stuff.
That way, if you have more music than video you can "borrow" space from video to hold music.

Well you see I am a used to be Windows user, and I had partitions on my HD.
I suppose I don`t really need to do this, I of course do have seperate
folders for all my work in my Home folder as it is any way.
So really I may as well leave it as it is then.

Just as a comment: I think having all those separated partitions would be more of a harassment than a logical division, since you can run out of space in one partition and still have plenty of space on another.

One good logical distribution would be a partition for the system and a separated one for your entire home folder. That way all your data would be in a different partition, would you decide to change the distribution / reinstall, you would just keep the same home partition.

hi guys,

I am a new guy starting to play with Ubuntu. And I have installed my first Ubuntu 7.10 on my testing Dell laptop, allowing it to use the whole disk space. So I want to ask two things: a) Will it be a problem for me to create a partition, once i fully installed the system into my laptop? b) Is it also possible to install Windows into my system, even without making a partition? so that i can use my C# within windows? I thank you guys for advising me on this small issue. I am just a Windows person, and I am planning to migrate myself to Linux.
