32 bit or 64 bit Ubuntu software

Asked by Milardo

I have a amd athlon 64 x2 5000+ processor and I received by mail requested regular and 64 bit Ubuntu installation cd. What does it take to have a 64 bit pc? Is mine a 64 bit pc at all. Can I run 64 bit ubuntu? What are the advantages and disavantages? If I run 64 bit can I still run most linux programs?

Thanks for the link. I will try the 64 bit cd. However will certain linux applications run just fine on 64 bit?

Since all of our packages are compiled for both, there shouldn't be any differences. Only some restricted packages might be different.

Otherwise, all Open Source software has the source code available and therefore can be compiled for 64 bit.

Hope this helps.
