don't effort to compile it. ubuntu has already compiled xmms for you. open a terminal ( Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and type this commands:

sudo apt-get update

hit enter, type root password when asked and hit enter again. When done type this command:

sudo apt-get install xmms

(You can do this via Synaptic Package Manager. To run synaptic go to system-> administration -> synaptic package manager)

Does it has any relationship with the Amarok software? It seems a bit difficult to play media files through it. Even if I tried I can't handle with it.

you probably have to install codecs. open synaptic and search for something like "mp3 codec" "win32 codec" etc.. install codecs and try again. no xmms has no relationship with amarok.

You can install beep-media-player the most fast and like winamp , amarok, and if you go to Add/Remove programms you can see in Collection music many programms to play mp3 after programms you only need codecs in the same catalog , gstreamers codecs.
