System Restore/Refresh Comannd

Asked by june

I'm new and still learning Ubuntu 7.10, but I always mess with my computer. Just like window, Is there a “system restore” in Ubuntu so that every time I did something wrong with Ubuntu I can just go to system restore and goes back to its previous setting, and also, do Ubuntu have a refresh command to refresh my desktop?

Thanks in advance

june,

There is no "system restore" in Ubuntu, nor in any other linux distribution that I am aware of. There are many backup/restore solutions available, one you may be interested in reviewing is sbackup. I hope that is helpful.

It is not clear what you mean "refresh my desktop." Would you expand on what you mean?

To refresh your desktop, just press the mouse on the desktop, and then the F5 key.

June,

I think then, that Vadim's answer is what you are looking for. Press and hold the left mouse-click button on the Desktop, and hit F5.

I tested it on mine, and it appears to refresh the Desktop.

I am curious, my question is the same concerning a MS WINDOWS style system restore. I found something at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/systemrestore?action and it states that if you go to System > Administration and in this group there should be a function titled "Restore System" ; however I am not able to find anything. Any thoughts?

puppy linux fan,

The document you refer to (SystemRestore, not systemrestore), is more a proposal for discussion which is why you won't find a "system restore" function. It simply has not been implemented.

Best regards,

Harvey

Harvey,

Oh, I was reading it wrong, thinking it was a function currently in Ubuntu 7.1. I have ran into problems when trying to run Compliz or Beryl removing functionality from the default Windows Managers and then I can not change them back to the defaults without reinstalling the whole operating system. Is there a command I can type into terminal to repair missing title bars if the title bar is ever erased when using either of these features.

Thanks,
Steve Powers

Eep! Yes, you can just type "metacity --replace" in the terminal, or press
alt+f2 and type it there, to go back to the original window manager.

Or you can do "compiz --replace" to simply reload compiz. No need to
reinstall anything at all.
