Javascript and https web sites not working in all web browsers

Asked by dugiehowsa

At first I thought the problem was just in firefox, but now I am experiencing the issue in epiphany and opera as well.

When I try to use javascripts that redirect to secure (https) sections of web sites, the web browser hangs, and eventually errors out with a server not responding message.

When I try to use other javascripts on the web sites that do not redirect to secure (https) sections, then the browsers operate as expected.

Are javascript libraries tied to browsers or to the OS. I am running Gutsy Desktop (7.10), and upgraded from Feisty Desktop (7.04).

The sites I have been able to replicate this issue on are:

www.citizensbank.com -> Click on the "Login" button on the main page
www.ticketmaster.com -> Click on the "Look for tickets" button on any page

I experience this problem only on a single PC, and I cannot tell the difference between this Gutsy PC and other Gutsy PCs.

What I did not know before I started troubleshooting this issue, is that java and javascript are completely different things. So I do not believe that the java plugin has anything to do with this issue.

But to answer your question, the sun-java6-plugin is installed correctly, as I have confirmed this both in the about:plugins page and through the java verification page.

Problem solved. I was running peergaurdnf (http://sourceforge.net/projects/moblock-deb). As soon as I killed that process the javascripts redirecting to https worked in all browsers. I also removed the link from the /etc/init.d directory so it will no longer start automatically on startup.

NOTE: Javascript and Java are two completely different things. This was a very important lesson I learned through this process. Javascript engines are embeded as part of the browsers. Java Runtime Environments require a java-plugin. You can actually run javascript with out having the a java-pluging installed.
