dialup modem problem not working in ubuntu

Asked by Mahmood Hussain

I am a new ubuntu user. I don't able to connect to the internet through my dialup conexant hsf modem. I can only get connected to the internet through modem. I don't know how to configure it in ubuntu I don't even know whether its driver is installed automatically or not. I have ubuntu 6.06 LTS installed on my desktop now I am planning to switch back to Windows XP because it automatically detects my modem and instals its driver. My modem works excellent with windows. Secondly, I cannot buy driver. If there is some solution for it please do let me know. One more thing that I want to say is that why ubuntu developers are not including modem drivers in ubuntu so that the user like me don't have problems.

If you want to use your Conexant, you can try these drivers: http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/downloads-installer.php

Free version is only capable to reach 14.4Kbps, while full version permits you to connect at full speed. License price is about 20 $, but I think it would be better if you plan to buy an external serial modem compatible with GNU/Linux (almost every model nowadays).

Have you checked out https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DialupModemHowto

As far as going with drivers from Linuxant, if you upgrade after the 6mos, you will have to pay them again, and again, and again.

It would really be cheaper to buy a well supported modem if getting the free drivers to work for you doesn't work.

As for why Ubuntu does not include certain drivers, it is because they are proprietary software, which goes against everything that Ubuntu is.

There are a type of modem called "winmodems". In general they are a bit hard to be configured. So the fact may be that you are using a "winmodem"

My Dell inspiron 4150 laptop has a PCMCIA 56k us robotics modem in one of the slots.

I have tried various versions of Fedora above vdrsion 3, and the previous Ubuntu 7.01
with no success.

I have heard that the linux kernel abandoned PCMCIA-cs for PCMCIA -utils. With that change,
Fedora quit working.

I have not tried Feisty fawn (7.04) yet, but if the PCMCIA handler is utils and not cs I hold out little hope.

Do I dare?
